The human brain seeks understanding, yet understanding belongs to the world and leads only to more questions. Truth, love, God and life cannot be understood; they must be _be_. Relationships afflict until the impulse to understand is surrendered.

SUMMARY
Barry answers a letter of distress by pointing to the central mistake: attachment to understanding. Understanding is of the animal brain, which can manage worldly arrangements but cannot know truth. Because the brain's limit is understanding, every resolved question leads to another, and the seeker remains in motion—never in being. Hence the instruction: give up trying to understand.
He shows how this works in relationships. Stress and strain appear precisely to expose the futility of analysis. They afflict until one stops attempting to work others out and simply is. Every relationship is passing; life itself is beautiful now. When one tries to understand, one misses the 'wave of life' by counting the water. Being now erases the distance understanding tries to bridge.
Barry separates the brain-made world (traffic rules, bank accounts) from the earth's wonder (sky, clouds, birdsong). Use understanding for the world; do not bring it into life. In unhappiness one must 'quit or surrender': either leave what hurts or surrender the drive to understand. Karma is not God's test; it is you playing the game of understanding. End the game by being life now, and unity—the one I—replaces division.
