Nothing arising: the rarest state on Earth

Recording 19 of 48

Stillness without object, silence without thought

Barry Long invites immediate entry into being—stillness without object—by dropping emotions so the mind can go quiet. From this ground, consciousness (within) and awareness (without) are one, and life can be lived factually rather than emotionally.

SUMMARY

Being is described as the rarest state on Earth, without attribute or object. Emotions are named as the ground of mind; remove them and thinking subsides. With eyes closed, one enters the conscious state of nothing; with eyes open, one meets the world of awareness. They are harmonious unless the mind comes in between.

From being arise realisations: immortality (there is no death) and the knowledge that God is 'nothing'—the absence of person or thing with the consciousness of 'I' remaining. Trust belongs only to being, not to persons, masters, or beliefs.

Practical counsel follows: act wholly because action purifies; do not judge situations—be true to them. Break continuities of stress with brief returns to being. Forgive the whole past to end conditioning. Release feelings, including excitement, since every rise demands a fall.
