Pure of Heart: Containing Love & Cleaning out the Vessel

The Direct Method for Purifying the Heart

Barry Long states that all emotions are negative and distinguishes love as a state of knowledge or sensation, not an emotion. He urges listeners to act on the truth of situations rather than personal feelings, which are inherently selfish and unreliable. Barry describes a “pure heart” as one free from emotions such as resentment and self-judgement. 'Love is not a feeling' is one of the main points in Barry's teaching and this session provides a comprehensive understanding of this teaching point.

SUMMARY

Barry draws a distinction between love and emotion. Emotion is always negative because it belongs to the self and is rooted in past hurt, attachment, projection, excitement, and dissatisfaction. Love, by contrast, is not an emotion or even a feeling, but a state of knowledge and sometimes a pure sensation – still, immediate, and impersonal. When love is emotionalised, it turns into self-expression, excitement, and drama, which obscures its true nature. Real love must be contained rather than projected; through that containment, the self is gradually purified, the heart becomes clear, and love begins to express itself naturally through one's actions without self-seeking or demand.

Suffering continues as long as we cling to the past or act from emotion, whereas freedom begins when we stop indulging feelings, let the past go, and sink inward to the stillness, purity, and living truth at the centre of one's being.
